Let’s get started!
Lemon Garlic Grilled Cheese Ingredients:
- 4 slices of sourdough bread: You can use slices of bread from any sandwich, but I prefer sourdough bread as the flavor combo with the cheese and garlic really hit the spot. Plus, sourdough is a bit healthier than normal bread.
- 4 slices of mozzarella cheese: Unlike many grilled cheeses, I prefer to use mozzarella cheese instead of cheddar cheese. This cheese melts into a delicious cheese heaven, no matter what it is used on. Its flavor also stands out, creating a uniqueness.
- 2 slices of provolone cheese: Provolone is my absolute favorite type of cheese. Something about its mild, smoky flavor really draws me in.
- 1 clove of garlic, minced: This is the key to creating something else than plain Jane grilled cheese! The garlic will take your grilled cheese to the next level!
- 2 tablespoons of butter, room temperature: You can also use olive oil if you prefer, but if you use butter, make sure it is soft enough to coat your bread easily. Leaving it at room temp for about 20 minutes prior works great.
- 1 teaspoon of lemon zest: This adds a little extra zing to your grilled cheese and ties all the flavors from the bread, garlic butter, and cheese together! If you don’t feel like getting the zest, lemon juice will also do. I use about 1 tablespoon, but flavor as you see fit.
- Freshly ground black pepper and kosher salt: As with any good recipe, adding seasonings really spices up the meal, ties everything together, and makes it delicious.
- Chopped parsley and parmesan for garnish: As any cooking show will teach you, it is not only about taste but also about presentation! Sprinkle a little of each of these over your grilled cheese, and it will look like it truly did come from a five-star restaurant.
How to make Lemon Garlic Grilled Cheese:
Overall this recipe should take about 10 minutes!
- Mix the butter, garlic, and lemon zest in a small bowl.
- Evenly and lightly slather one side of each slice with the mixture
- Sprinkle a dash of salt and pepper and put the cheese inside (the non-buttered side) of your sandwich,
- Heat a nonstick skillet over medium heat. Medium-low heat works as well but may take a little longer to cook.
- Place the outside of your bread slices (butter side down) and toast until golden brown and the cheese is melted. This usually takes about 4 minutes. Then, flip and roast the other side as well.
- While this cooks, you can prepare the remaining slices of bread, but remember the bread is browning and you don’t want to overcook because they char quickly, so keep an eye on your pan!
- Remove from heat, and transfer to a serving plate.
- Divide your garnish and top each sandwich top with the remaining parmesan and parsley accordingly.
