The impossible cheeseburger pie turns America’s all-American cheeseburger on its side, so we get a cheeseburger that can be eaten with a fork.

And it is impossibly easy to make!

It has all the comfort food flavors you’d expect and a light crust that bakes up crisp and flakey.

In addition to convenience, this cheeseburger pie is delicious.

Just imagine the taste of that golden cheese top layer and the rich beefy filling, channeling the comfort of your favorite cheeseburger.

I’ve been making this for years for my family, and everyone loves this dinner recipe!

Impossibly easy cheeseburger pie is absolutely delicious and convenient.

Cheeseburger Pie Ingredients:

  • 1 unbaked pie crust: If you want to showcase your cooking skills, you can make a pie crust from scratch. If pressed on time, options include using Bisquick, Pillsbury, biscuit mix, pancake, and baking mix. Or any pie dough you choose.
  • 450g or 1lb coarse ground beef: Hamburger meat is the king/queen of this meal. It gives this casserole a juicy, meaty, and even beefy flavor while providing a filling. You can substitute it with ground turkey if you are trying to eat healthier! Another option I don’t use often enough is sausage.
  • 1 medium-diced onion: Freshly diced onion adds subtle sweetness while enhancing the other savory burger flavors.
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced: I add garlic to everything, but especially to this meal because it adds a warm depth of flavor and helps bring all the contrasting flavors together. If you don’t have garlic, you can also use garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika:  It’s mild, smoky, and colorful! Adding this to your pie will elevate your taste buds to the next level and make it truly unique.
  • Salt and black pepper to taste: Like almost every American dinner, adding salt and pepper is a must. It can be easy to forget, so be sure to remember it. You don’t need to use any fancy salt unless you want to. Regular salt will do the trick!
  • 1 cup cheddar cheese, shredded: My favorite part is the cheese layer on top! If you want to use a different type of cheese, then go for it! This is all about your favorite cheeseburger toppings! My family loves it when I use pepper jack
  • 2 large eggs: Eggs help hold the hamburger meat together, creating a cohesive binding. Plus, they add a little protein and their unique flavor
  • 1/2 cup milk: Instead of drying out the filling, milk adds a creamy consistency that keeps it moist and delicious. While I have not tried it, you can also use skim milk here.
  • ½ cup flour: This all-purpose flour with baking powder helps make the pie filling light and airy, but adding this is optional, so if you prefer to skip it, you can!
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder: The baking powder helps the filling puff up just a little so it doesn’t flatten. You can also omit this ingredient, especially if you are just making it for yourself at home
  • Sliced tomatoes and pickled jalapeños to garnish: The fresh touches of tomatoes, pickled jalapeños, or any other favorite burger fixings your heart desires enhance the pie’s taste and its overall appearance! Options to consider are ketchup, mustard, shredded lettuce, avocado, tomato sauce, green peppers, and chopped pickles, preferably dill.

How to make Cheeseburger Pie:

  1. Preheat and Grease Dish: Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Lightly grease your baking dish with olive oil and then place the prepared pie crust into the 9-inch pie plate or dish and set aside.
  2. Cook Beef: In a 10-inch skillet on medium heat, cook beef and onion over medium heat. Add the garlic and stir occasionally. The garlic and onion should be caramelized. This usually takes about 8-10 minutes.
  3. Strain Grease: Once the beef is browned, strain the excess fat out of the large skillet.
  4. Add Seasoning: Stir in salt, paprika, and pepper with the ground beef mixture, and then spread in pie plate on the bottom crust.
  5. Mix Ingredients: In a small bowl, mix the remaining ingredients with a fork or wire whisk except for the cheese, then pour the flour, baking powder, eggs, and milk over the meat.
  6. Add Cheese: Sprinkle with cheese cheese on top.
  7. Bake: Bake for 25-30 minutes or until the top is golden and the filling is set. Test by placing a toothpick in center comes out clean
  8. Let it Cool: Let the pie cool before slicing. Minutes before serving, top with sliced tomatoes, pickled jalapeños, and any other toppings you selected.

Tips and Tricks:

  • Try different additions and toppings, such as bacon for a bacon cheeseburger pie! Or mushroom and Swiss!
  • Add a little extra something to your burger meat with Worcestershire sauce
  • Make a taco pie by mixing taco seasoning with your taco meat. Top the pie with sour cream, avocado, and tomato. Drizzle on some of your favorite hot sauce. I’ve made this several times, and I love this dish!
  • Wrap your pie dish in plastic wrap or use another airtight container to keep your leftovers fresh.
