Ingredients for Tomato Ravioli With Asparagus and Basil
- 1 package of fresh cheese ravioli: Ready-made ravioli saves you the time and energy it takes to make the dough and shape it. Super quick prep time allows your dinner to be done in just a few minutes.
- 2 cups cherry tomatoes, halved: Your cut tomatoes will cook down to create a tomato sauce. Make sure you’re picking out quality ripe cherry tomatoes for your pasta to take it to the next level.
- 1 bunch asparagus, trimmed and cut into 1-inch pieces: Asparagus is one of those simple ingredients that really ups the flavor profile of a dish. It works great as a side for this tasty meal.
- 3 tablespoons olive oil: Olive oil serves as a base to cook down your vegetables. It will layer the bottom of a skillet before you throw in your produce.
- 2 cloves garlic, minced: Minced garlic definitely makes this dish 10x better by giving it that classic Italian garlic flavor. We recommend making this dish with fresh garlic for the best results.
- 1/4 cup fresh basil, chopped: Usually used as a garnish, this ingredient actually takes center stage in this recipe. Tomatoes and basil together create one of the most incredible flavor compositions.
- Salt and pepper to taste: Black pepper flakes and salt bring everything together. Add salt to bring out the flavors in every individual ingredient, balancing it with a dash of acidity if needed.
- Grated Parmesan cheese, for garnish: No delicious dinner of pasta is complete without a heavy coating of parmesan cheese.

How to Make This Tomato Ravioli
- Cook Pasta: In a large pot of salted cooking water, add your pasta and cook the ravioli according to package directions. The cook time is around 5-6 minutes, and you’ll be sure it’s done once the pockets have risen to the surface.
- Drain ravioli before serving: Stir occasionally, and reserve some pasta water.
- Prep Pan: Heat a pan over medium heat and add the olive oil into the bottom of the pan.
- Sauté: Add in the garlic and sauté until you’re practically drooling over the smell.
- Add Vegetables: Finally, you can halve half the tomatoes and asparagus and add them to the medium skillet. Let these ingredients cook down until the asparagus is tender, and you notice the tomatoes breaking down and turning brown.
- Ravioli: Now you can add the ravioli along with some of that pasta water. Stir until everything has been heated through.
- Remove the pan from the hot stove eye and add in your basil. Sprinkle salt and pepper and/or red pepper flakes to taste.
- Serve while the tomato ravioli is still warm and add a thick layer of parmesan on top.

Notes and Substitutions
- If you’re not a fan of creamy tomato ravioli, maybe try this recipe with tortellini instead.
- This small, cheese filled noodle is one of my absolute favorites, and you can also find these in ready made packages.
- All you’ll have to do is cook according to the package directions and you’ve got an entirely different meal.
- For many of my tomato pasta recipes, I like to add ricotta where I can. Ricotta is a creamy cheese that works perfectly with these Italian pasta dishes.
- Add the juice of half a lemon if you’re looking for a tangier flavor.
- If you spend a lot of time in the kitchen and love to create, look into making your own sauce for ravioli.
- Creamy shallot sauce is always a crowd-pleaser, or you could blend down whole tomatoes for a thicker sauce.
- To cook down tomatoes on their own (like for a sauce), toss them in the oven to bake at 425° for 20 minutes.
- If you’re on the opposite end of the spectrum and in-depth cooking isn’t your favorite, you can always opt for canned tomatoes.
- The one part of this meal that should be substituted is the asparagus. Many try to use a swiss chard instead, but don’t be fooled.
- Nothing will pair quite as well as classic green asparagus.
- For those cooking light, think about ways you might could cut down on the salt and fats. Make this dish without cheese, or use small amounts of oil.
- You can add cooking liquid of any kind in place of the olive oil. Avocado oil is growing increasingly popular.
