Blackberry Margarita Smash Ingredients:
- 1 cup fresh blackberries. If fresh blackberries are not available, you can substitute with frozen ones. All you have to do is boil frozen blackberries to extract the blackberry pulp and you can use any leftover frozen ones to add more ‘ice’ to your drink.
- 2 tablespoons sugar. While sugar is the standard, if you’re feeling adventurous, use simple syrup or agave.
- 1/2 cup tequila. Tequila enthusiasts! You already know your go-to brand, but if you find yourself at the store thinking “Which tequila?” grab any you like — or make this a mocktail, skipping the tequila for everyone who doesn’t drink!
- 1/4 cup lime juice (freshly squeezed). While fresh-squeezed lime juice will surely bring sour and zing to your cocktail, don’t be a crazy perfectionist if you don’t have time to juice limes and just want a margarita; go ahead and use bottled lime juice.
- 1/8 cup triple sec. You can use any orange liqueur, including Curaçao. However, this ingredient is key to creating that summer blend you are looking for, so please be sure not to skip it!
- Ice cubes. The ice will ensure your drink stays cold and refreshing no matter what time of year it is! As mentioned above, you can use frozen blackberries and have fun picking your ice shape!
- Lime slices and additional blackberries for garnish. While these are optional, they will ensure that your drink is delicious and beautiful! It adds some effort, but it is worth it for that picturesque summer moment.
- Salt or sugar for rimming the glasses. Having the rim of your glass coated in sugar or salt (depending on your mood) ups your bartender game and gives you that pop of flavor, whether it’s sweet or salty.
How to make a Blackberry Margarita Smash
- Blackberries: Muddle the blackberries (press, then twist), add the sugar and stir so that it is all mixed thoroughly, until the berries take on a pulpy appearance.
- Optional: Pour the blackberry mixture into a fine mesh sieve set over a pitcher and press on the solids with a spoon to strain as much liquid as possible. Discard the solids. I’ll skip this step as blackberries add color, as well as a little more of their delicious flavor, to the drink.
- Blackberry mixture: Add the blackberry mixture, tequila, lime juice and triple sec to a blender. Blend to combine. You can put it all together in a cocktail shaker and shake, though in that case, I’d probably include ice.
- Create your rim: Run a lime slice around the rim of your desired glass, then dip the rim into salt or sugar, depending on your preference and mood.
- Fill your glasses: Fill the glasses with ice cubes and pour the blackberry margarita mixture over the ice. Put a lime wedge on the rim of the glass and any additional blackberries on top of your drink.
- Get out of the kitchen, sit back, and sip immediately!
